Ohio Tops Other States in Claims for Metal Theft
Ohio leads the nation in property insurance claims for the theft of copper and other metals, an industry-supported organization that fights insurance fraud says. The National Insurance Crime Bureau says Ohio property owners made 2,398 such claims during the three-year period from 2009 through 2011. Nationwide, such claims broke the 25,000 mark over the same period, an 81 percent jump from the three-year period from 2006 through 2008.

Forest fire authorities say a series of a dozen small wildfires over the past two months may herald an active fire season this summer on the California coast. Anthony Escobar, Los Padres National Forest fire chief, said this week that vegetation is extremely dry after a winter with exceptionally low rainfall, but there is still just enough moisture to combat blazes quickly and effectively. Attorney Christopher Asvar believes he has secured the highest known workers’ compensation insurance settlement in California history, totaling $8.9 million on behalf of a Antonio Enriquez, who suffered a traumatic brain injury in 2004 at the age of 18 after falling from a scaffold.
